Rock journalist Steve Rosen has been interviewing the most iconic guitarists and musicians for five decades. He is the author of eight music biographies including his most recent book on Edward Van Halen.
The 580-page, self-published hardback is titled Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen.
Rosen met the late and legendary guitarist in 1977 and had a friendship with him that lasted until 2003.
No other writer ever had the type of intimate friendship Rosen enjoyed and for that reason, Tonechaser stands on its own.
There are moments of joy and moments of sadness. The writer left no stone unturned in revealing – in understanding – who Van Halen was.
Rosen introduced the guitarist to Ritchie Blackmore, Billy Gibbons and Les Paul in what were truly historic moments.
The writer spent a lot of time at Edward’s 5150 studio and in turn, Van Halen would oftentimes turn up unannounced at Rosen’s quaint Hollywood Hills guesthouse.
Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen is now in its 3rd printing.
The massive hardback has received extraordinary reviews from Guitar Player, Guitar World, Classic Rock, and many other highly-regarded publications.
There has been such a clamour for the book, that an audiobook version was released on July 1st but this is no ordinary audiobook.
The 30-hour audio experience is embedded with all the origInal, archival interviews Rosen conducted with the guitarist up to 45+ years ago.
Hearing Edward speak in 1978 and 1979 when his legend was just being formed is nothing short of mindblowing.
Here is what Chris Scapelliti, Editor-in-Chief, Guitar Player magazine said:
“Tonechaser is an intimate look at rock guitar’s most inscrutable innovator from the viewpoint of a close and trusted friend. Steve Rosen goes where few have gone before and takes you along for the ride of your life. You won’t find a better or more penetrating look at the genius and humanity of Eddie Van Halen.”
