As we approach the end of 2020, I can’t help but feel optimistic about the COVID situation in the New Year. We’re about to go through the peak, right?
For me, there are many reasons to be optimistic about the current situation. Take the quadruple whammy of Halloween, Guy Fawkes, Our 6-year-old son’s birthday, and Christmas, all in the space of 2 months. Usually, that’s brutal. But this year we can kick back a little as we have the mother of all excuses.
Again, usually, there’s always regular family get together’s which are a joy for Mrs. H, the kids, and everyone else except me really. Once again. Thank you, COVID. Thank you, thank you, thank you!.
Next, the School situation turned out well. We got the first bit of quality time to ourselves for 7 years as they all started full-time education, plus no COVID closures AND the benefits of working from home. All good stuff.
Those are the obvious ones, but I suppose I’m getting a lot of pleasure out of the small things too, like just being able to walk to the shops any time of day to pick up some groceries, or some new shoes for the wife, while getting an hour’s exercise in. It’s nice. But that’s not the end of this new wave of optimism, Lately, at least in our house, we seem to be getting to the end of most days thinking, you know what? I enjoyed Today, Today was a good day!
Yes, I can see the stats. COVID Cases, hospital admissions, and deaths are going up again as we approach the flu season. But in just over 2 months time, it’ll be 2021, a new chapter. We need to be hopeful, pandemics have run their course before and we came out the other side.
This is a once in a lifetime situation that’s gifted us the opportunity to take stock, focus on ourselves, each other, the important stuff like family, health, the roof over our head, the food on our table. It’s been a circuit-breaker to the monotony of the rat race and pursuing things we’ve been programmed to but just didn’t have the time to question. Until now.
But the really powerful thing for me is, Christmas and the New Year are always special. I can’t see COVID competing with a children’s (and big children’s) fairytale, Santa coming down the chimney and all that, we may even be out sledging soon! Even as an adult, I’m still 100% sold on the idea of peace and goodwill to all men. I still get teary-eyed watching the Salvation Army brass band play Christmas Carols. Then, when Big Ben strikes 12 on January 1st and 2020 is ceremoniously resigned to the history books, hopefully, COVID will follow. If not, well, we’ve been revitalized, renewed, and toasted to a New Year, which will always be a reason to celebrate!
