I Don’t Like Sundays

Bob Geldof didn’t like Mondays, but Sunday has always been my least favourite day of the week by far. Why? That’s easy ……

The Coffee Shop graveyard

It’s 3pm on a Sunday afternoon, you’re tired and hungry. The waitress’ head is elsewhere, the food has run out.   You get what your given, or what’s left, an egg mayonnaise sandwich you don’t even like, begrudgingly prepared by a worker no doubt dreading her 30-mile bus ride home from the middle of nowhere.  The place is a mess and nobody want’s to be here, not me, not the staff.  Only on a Sunday afternoon.

The Dark Sceptre of Work

You could wake up with the best of intentions. Some Gardening? A nice family trip out? It doesn’t really matter what you do, because in the back of your mind, you know its work tomorrow, and as the minutes tick by it draws even closer like an expanding dark cloud, back to the grind.

Sunday Afternoon Countryside Hell

The countryside should be a beautiful, energising, happy place. Not on a Sunday afternoon it isn’t. Once the hour of 2pm passes, these traditional communities tend to drift off back to wherever they spend their lives. A weekly family get-together, late Sunday lunch, I have no idea.  We’re left stranded with no amenities whatsoever. Closed shops, petrol stations, everything. How do these people survive?  Where does everyone go? Why?

Of course you get the occasional event, a car-boot, a village fair of some sort, there’ll be rides provided by gypsy travellers, there’ll be tractors and lots of mud and it’ll stink of manure,  but there’ll be no toilets or cash-point facilities and it’ll have cleared out by the early afternoon.

There will however be lots of scones for sale… and …. crafts?

Greater mental stimulation required.

Weird Laws for Sunday Opening Hours

I get it. Nobody likes working at the weekend.  But why restrict the opening hours on a Sunday? Nobody complains about a Saturday (My favourite day of the week).  In fact, people think nothing about putting in a full shift and hitting the town soon after. If you choose a career in Retail, surely you should expect to work the hours needed?

The Day of Rest, the Sabbath day, Church day. Sunday has always been a special day for a lot of people and always will be for them.  But this is now dying off, here at least, so why should ancient laws still be applicable and affecting the majority ? No Idea whatsoever!

Go to the continent, and you get ‘siestas’. This makes a lot more sense, as shops close later so the hours are the same.  Having laws enforced by outdated Christian Religion seems madness, and is reducing the productivity / growth of the country.

I’ll say it again. Madness.

Sluggish Sunday

Most weeks I can’t wait for Sunday to be over and the working week to begin, open for business and ready for action.  I’m energised. Contrast this with a Sunday where in a nutshell nobody can be bothered to do anything.  This combined negative energy sucks the will out of everything and everyone.  People waste hours and hours going to church or walking their dog in a field. It’s unproductive and pointless. The whole world it seems is on a go-slow.

The Wasted Hangover Day

Quite a high proportion of my Sundays have been wasted nursing my Saturday night hangover (or nowadays my Friday night hangover). Combine this with all of the above and you’re in a world of hurt.

Roll on Monday!

What’s your thoughts on Sundays?
