You may have noticed I’ve started to republish old blog posts for a number of reasons which could be invaluable to other bloggers.
So, my 5 reasons to republish old blog posts are:
1. My writing has improved
I’ve started blogging 6 years ago and I’ve learned a lot in that time, which. sadly, isn’t reflected in the older articles. It’s time to bring them up to par and redress the balance as I want my blog, as a whole, to be of high quality.
In other words, some of those older articles were embarrasing!
2. My audience has grown
My audience has increased exponentially over the years, meaning a high percentage of today’s readership have missed some of what I believe to be my best, early articles. Republishing them is a no-brainer as they have a ready-made audience.
3. The content isn’t evergreen
Blog posts containing outdated and irrelevant content carry far less value than evergreen content, which is valid forever and has far greater potential for traction and success. I’m now working towards as much evergreen content as possible to cut down on potential re-work later.
4. Republishing old blog posts helps with writer’s block
I’ve sometimes had periods where I haven’t posted for a while (not too many thankfully), and have felt pressured into getting something out there to stay active, which is hard when you’re struggling for ideas for something new, interesting or useful. I’ll openly admit it, sometimes the act of posting content was more important than the actual content itself. I’m not proud of that, and it can’t continue.
This is a surprising one, but logical I suppose. As it happens, the simple act of editing and thinking about the topics covered in older articles is a natural trigger for new ideas and concepts for new articles. All is good.
5. Republishing old blog posts is good for SEO, traffic and revenue
All of the above, of course, improves Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), traffic, regular visitors, and ultimately revenue. Google’s algorithm likes regular posting of good, relevant, evergreen content, so republishing polished, more up-to-date editions of your best work makes perfect sense.
One caveat – Don’t forget about new content!
Something I’m very conscious of is the danger that the success of republishing existing content will be at the expense of brand-new articles. However, a republished article DOES NOT count towards my overall post tally, and I have a goal of 500 blog posts which is rapidly approaching.
So, no, republishing old blog posts is just another tool in my blogging toolbox that I’ll use to drive its success…
…And so should YOU!
Hi Linda. Thanks for stopping by. Yeah I also have diary-style posts so I’ll update those if need be, rather then republish.
I have done that before, where I reposted photos (that’s what my blog is, posting pictures) from an older blog post, with different text, though I always make it clear when I’m doing so. I call it repost-remix, but I’ve only done that a few times. Remix, that’s more a word of your domain, music, ha. It’s interesting about that evergreen vs not content. One would like one’s posts to be universal, but then again, blogging is like keeping a diary, so it’s always going to be relevant to the time it was posted.
I know one guy that uses the same links constantly and just updates the new content, its super annoying because his blog looks like he just started blogging yesterday.
I can promise my readers that won’t happen here.
