Covid Diary: Remember clapping for the NHS?

A few months ago, every Thursday at 8pm, we clapped for the NHS. Have we forgotten why?

Has the United Kingdom gone mad? Only a few months ago we were in such a bad situation that the whole nation felt the need to come together to show solidarity and appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the NHS. Let’s rewind and remember why.

A 1000 deaths a day and the NHS almost overrun, that’s why.

Fast forward to today and what do we get? Swathes of the community ignoring the rise in cases and the resulting restrictions. These are the same folk that ‘got it’ the first time round in emotional scenes up and down the country. For the elderly at least, the beating of pots and pans and the playing of music was a stark reminder of the dark days of WW2, but also a welcome return of that long lost treasure, community spirit. So what’s changed this time around?

Well, I suppose people have lockdown fatigue. They’re tired, frustrated, scared, depressed, and generally sick to death of the way things panned out and have been handled, and that’s what worries me the most…

…NOTHING has changed since the first wave.

Cases will go up, hospital admissions will follow, and deaths will follow that, but this time we’ve no lockdown to protect us, plus we’re approaching the flu season.

All in all, probably not a great time to become blasé about the situation, we may even clap the NHS again if enough people care this time around.

Let’s go back to caring, appreciation, respect and solidarity. That’s what got us through the first wave.
